"Creating a Cleaner Future through Alternative Fuels for Florida"

The transportation industry alone exceeds our total domestic oil production by 2 MILLION BARRELS PER DAY. By 2010 the US Department of Energy projects that this gap will grow to 6 Million Barrels per Day. This dependence on imported oil is a major concern for our national security and economy. This dependence makes us vulnerable to the impact of world oil prices and supplies.

The Florida Gold Coast Clean Cities Program is working to help reduce our region’s dependence on foreign oil. We are doing this by encouraging the widespread use of alternative fuels and alternative fuel vehicles.

More than one third of our nation’s population lives where air quality violates federal public health standards. Gasoline and diesel vehicles are major contributors poor air quality. They emit hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, and carbon monoxide that pollute our air. Transportation related emissions cause more than 50 percent of the air pollution in the Florida Gold Coast Region *.

One of the key components of our mission is to improve the environment by promoting the use of alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs).

So, how will AFVs improve the environment and air quality in the Gold Coast Region?

Using alternative fuels greatly reduces ozone forming emissions and exposure to toxic gases. These emissions are created not only when fuel is burned but through the evaporation of fossil fuels. When these emissions are combined with sunlight, ozone forms close to the ground. This is where it is harmful to humans, wildlife, and vegetation. Exposure to high levels of ozone can cause respiratory illness, headaches, and dizziness. Children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of ozone. In addition, driving AFVs reduces evaporative emissions and the likelihood of spills that can damage vegetation, water, and wildlife.

The Florida Gold Coast Clean Cities Program is working with its member to provide funding, incentives, refueling stations, and training and assistance for purchasing and using AFVs. Each year more AFVs are replacing gasoline and diesel fueled vehicles and that means cleaner air for all of us to breathe.

* Includes Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade Counties.

Over 50% of all the petroleum used in our country are imported. This costs us about $60 billion a year. Unfortunately, this amount is on the increase, adding to our trade deficit and costing us the loss of thousands of jobs. In Florida, we import about half of our petroleum. This costs our state about $4.3 billion a year. This is money lost to our local economies meaning a loss in wages and jobs.

Because alternative fuels like natural gas, propane, electricity and others are produced domestically, they keep dollars right here in our economy. Also, local companies are providing these alternative fuels and this supports jobs in our region.

Using alternative fuel vehicles stimulates our regional economy. They help create alternative fuel technologies and products, production and distribution systems, refueling infrastructure, vehicle dealers and maintenance services, and other commercial opportunities. Ultimately, this means new jobs and industries in our region.

The Florida Gold Coast Clean Cities Coalition is not just concerned about today, but tomorrow too. We are working with the Broward County School District to provide an alternative fuel curriculum for all middle school children. These children will be our future leaders, so they will learn about alternative fuels and how they improve our environment, economy, and national security. We hope that this ensures a legacy of cleaner air, a stronger economy, and a country with a safe and secure energy future.
