EV Ready Broward

What is EV Ready Broward?

EV Ready Broward (EVRB) is a community based private/public partnership committed to the introduction of electric transportation in Broward County. Championed by Florida Power and Light (FPL),  EVRB was organized in response to a national initiative orchestrated by the US Department of Energy, private sector partners and others to encourage the implementation of electric transportation into selected markets around the country.  After months of preparation that brought together a diverse group of community members, EVRB was launched in May 1996.

Is EVRB making a difference?

EVRB's five committees and the Board of Directors are proving that volunteers can and do make a difference:

Business Opportunities and Public Awareness - garnered support for EVRB's participation in EVS-14, the largest international symposium for electric vehicles held to date. An EVRB exhibit booth and hospitality suite reception were the results of this committee's work - both efforts a success. EVRB received more than 60 inquiries from companies expressing interest in relocating or developing businesses in South Florida.

Charging Infrastructure Master Plan - conceived, wrote and produced a guide for the effective integration of infrastructure into the Broward community.

Codes, Safety, Training and Environment - proposed and championed changes to Broward's building codes to bring about the reality of EV ready homes. Thanks to this committee, all Broward County emergency responders have been introduced to specialized training related to incidents involving electric vehicles . Additionally, County government has taken the lead in developing an objective environmental position paper evaluating the impact of electric transportation on air quality.

Education - supported and assisted Miramar High School and enabled students to build their own electric vehicle and successfully compete in national competitions.

Government Affairs - provided the impetus behind the birth of Clean Fuel Florida - a fuel neutral coalition that sought state funding, leveraged by local match dollars, in support of alternative fuel incentives. The initiative faired well during the 1998 state legislative

EVRB: A Replicable Model

A Private/Public Partnership Success

In achieving the goals of EVRB, the members are creating a community model that can be readily introduced elsewhere in Florida. Through this replication, EVRB will be the catalyst for generating other sustainable market areas in the state. FPL as the founding sponsor and leader in partnership with Broward County Government, will have facilitated a successful community-based effort that resulted in significant contributions to the larger goals related to national security, air quality and economic development while helping Florida to become the pacesetter for clean fuel transportation.
